Daity Mai and Agave Hotel Pozzuoli Napoli


The most sumptuous feast I enjoyed was at a hotel non far from the Naples ring road, but which seemed a world away.

The Hotel Agave – surrounded by green fields and silence – serves only local food. Fresh vegetables, newly caught seafood and sparkling white wine made with grapes from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, on the city’s edge.

Beginning with creamy balls of mozzarella, the five courses went through octopus, salmon and squid to broccoli pasta and the sweetest tiramisu I have ever tasted. And when they found out I was a vegetarian, minutes before the first course arrived, a whole new menu was created just for me. Even more impressively, it did not even include that dull veggie fall-back, risotto.

Specialities? Melt-in-the-mouth gnocchi - dumplings made from potato - beautifully light pizza bases and the freshest buffalo mozzarella which should be kept in its milk and, I was passionately informed, never put anywhere near a fridge - all stand out.
